Year 9 Exam revision homework – due Thursday 9 October

You will sit your end-of-unit exam on Thursday 9 October and it is imperative (crucially important) that you revise for this test. As you have been told before, and as the mock test last week showed, you will have a choice of two questions to answer – remember, only answer one question! The first question will be a character-based one; the second will be a theme-based one.

Referring to the social and historical context of the novel is essential – it is one of the things you will be marked on and failure to make regular, relevant references to context will result in your total mark being severely limited. I put some links to useful videos on America in the 1930s in a previous post; if you haven’t watched these yet, I would strongly advise you to do so, as well as doing research of your own. Note: do not write one, all-encapsulating paragraph about the 1930s – the examiner advises against this – but rather weave your references into the points that you make. For example, if you happen to write a paragraph about Curley’s wife threatening Crooks with getting him lynched, you should then work in a (specific, researched) reference to people taking the law into their own hands and persecuting black Americans in the first half of the 20th century.

Finally, I have attached an example (below) of another student’s exam paper in which he/she answers a question on the theme of anger. Some of the things I like about it are:

  • examples are always given to back-up points made
  • the effect on the audience (the reader) is considered
  • detailed, relevant references to context are made

What other good practice can you learn from and use yourself?

Good luck with your research.

America in the 1930s – helpful videos and advice on context

Year 9 students of Of Mice and Men, I have attached some resources to help you research and revise the context of the novel: the USA in the 1930s.

The GCSE examination board advises students that ‘general comments about the Dust Bowl and what happened in 1930s America are not what is required. It is much more apposite (appropriate) to make comments about how the theme impacts on the characters in the ranch and its hierarchy.’ Elsewhere, the examiner says that ‘candidates should avoid points about context…which are ‘bolted on’ but not strictly relevant’ to the extract chosen or questions to be answered. To sum up, do not write a paragraph about the Great Depression; instead, allow your background knowledge of this period of time to seep through your answers.

Yr 9 Themes in Of Mice and Men homework – due Monday 29 September

Your group was given a theme from Of Mice and Men to research. Following on from this, your homework is to carry out research using websites such as Sparknotes and Shmoop, among others, and take notes on how your theme is explored in the novel. Your notes should consist of an overview of the theme (where it fits in to the novel), relevant specific events, and key quotations from the novel.

Please bring your research to our next lesson, on Monday 29 September.

Mr Legowski’s Yr 9 homework – due Thursday 18 September

Does Curley’s wife deserve the treatment she receives in section (chapter) 2 of Of Mice and Men?

Remember to use make clear, accurate points about this character and back up what you say with evidence from the text. You may also want to refer to statements about Curley’s wife made by John Steinbeck in his letter to Claire Luce here.

A PDF copy of the novel can be found here.

Please write your answer in your exercise book (minimum 200 words) and bring it to our lesson on Thursday 18 September.
